In this Bootcamp update, we take a further step in setting up and optimizing a new WordPress site. This time around, we take a look at the four most essential plugins you should install. These plugins all ensure that the “inner workings” of your site are automatically optimized for better search engine optimization and smooth operation.

Essential WordPress Plugins:

  • Google XML Sitemaps
Builds and updates a search-engine crawlable sitemap of your entire website automatically.
  • Platinum SEO
Universal SEO plugin that takes care of proper canonicalization, automatically redirects URLs after a name-change, lets you customize the meta title, description and keywords and much more.
  • Revision Control
This plugin prevents WordPress from keeping evey single revision of every post or page you’ve ever created in storage forever. I recommend limiting it to two or three revisions, to keep you database lean.
  • WP-DBmanager
Excellent plugin that lets you schedule automatic security backups of your database. See this post for help with setting up and FTP connection.

NOTE:

Perhaps you noticed that there’s no anti-spam plugin listed. Since Akismet (which used to be standard with WordPress and free) is no longer free, I’m currently testing alternatives and I’ll be adding a recommendation for anti-spam very soon.
